Zero Waste Design wasn’t something I invented but the way I now use it, teach it, and build from it came from a very personal need.
I first came across the concept through Japanese designers and experimental approaches taught during my fashion education. I was fascinated by the logic, the geometry, and the minimal waste. But as I explored further, I began noticing the same thing again and again:
Most zero waste designs out there, while conceptually brilliant, didn’t feel wearable.
They were often oversized, boxy, or intentionally shapeless. Beautiful in theory, but not what most people would wear, sell, or feel good in.
And that’s when it hit me:
What if we could keep the intelligence of Zero Waste but make it modern, refined, and beautiful on the body?
What if we could create garments that draped elegantly, flattered the right places, and felt just as at home in a boutique or on a client as they would in a design school portfolio?
That question became a turning point in my creative journey.
I remembered one of the most formative experiences of my career working with a former Creative Director of Madame Grès, where I was introduced to the true artistry of geometrical cutting, creative draping, fabric manipulations, and bias shaping. That experience lit a fire in me. I began researching, collecting, and decoding the work of the greats: Madeleine Vionnet, Halston, Issey Miyake, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Charles James, Martin Margiela, and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. I didn’t just admire their work I studied how they played with fabric, how they engineered softness, tension, fluidity, and form.
What I saw in their process was a quiet rebellion they didn’t begin with sketches and patterns. They began with fabric. They let geometry, proportion, and movement guide the structure. It wasn’t called Zero Waste back then, but many of their methods reflected the same spirit: minimal seams, sculptural construction, unexpected layouts, and a deep respect for fabric as the starting point of design.
They didn’t design on paper. They sculpted in space. And that stayed with me.
So I started experimenting folding in those principles with my own creative instincts and couture training. I revisited everything I knew, exploring new ways to create shape and structure from clever cuts, placement, and modular construction.
Slowly, something new began to emerge:
A way of designing directly from the fabric that was sustainable, sculptural, and truly stylish.
It was Zero Waste but reimagined.
Now, it’s one of the core creative paths I share with students. Not because it’s trendy but because it solves real problems:
That’s how this dress came to life from a belief that Zero Waste can (and should) be both smart and stunning.
And that’s what you’ll experience in this workshop.
If you're an aspiring designer, learning these techniques early is like being handed a creative shortcut. You’ll bypass years of rigid pattern drafting and unlock a design workflow as unique as your creative fingerprint. Instead of sketching or drafting first, you'll design directly with fabric shaping it, folding it, and exploring new silhouettes in real time. That shift alone can transform how you see and interpret design possibilities.
If you’re a passionate home sewist, this method gives you something incredibly rare: high-fashion results that are shockingly simple to sew. You’ll learn to create garments that drape beautifully, flatter the body, and stand out without needing complex construction or formal training. Just smart shapes, purposeful layouts, and a fresh way of thinking.
This philosophy isn’t just about reducing waste it’s about removing creative limitations. It helps you see fabric differently, trust your instincts more, and develop garments that feel expressive, modern, and completely your own.
Think of it as unlocking a new room in your creative house one you didn’t even know existed.
Whether you’re launching your first fashion line or simply creating for the joy of it, this workshop is your starting point for a more sustainable, empowering, and intuitive design journey.
And this is just the beginning. This technique is part of a growing collection of sculptural, sustainable, and elegant designs we teach inside our larger creative system a portfolio of techniques that together form what we call the Direct Design Method.
In this workshop, you'll discover mind-blowing design and construction techniques that you never knew existed.
I'm excited to show you creative possibilities that will completely change how you think about dressmaking.
